The Importance of Nutritional Balance
00:22
Do you know, it's actually, I think I naturally start us off because I'm so used to this podcasting space. Unnecessarily so, because you're a very good talker and you could do that, but I'm always like, I'll start it, it's because I've got the control. I've controlled like the, the when we're on and when we're not. So you know we're on when I go, hey Jess. I like it. Maybe you could be, you could just give me like the thumbs up and I could be like, hey Max. Oh, amazing. I'll try that next time.
00:52
We could just try it. We could go like, we could see how it feels. We'll have like a variety of different like intros. We'll see which ones our audience likes, right? This is like the beautiful thing of launching is we can just try all of the different intros that feel good. We can even do like pump up songs. We could change that, you know, the song to our podcast. We could ask Bears to, maybe put a little Tupac on every now and then? No, no, cause we'll be done with the copyright. We'll be done for copyright.
01:20
All music comes through this. I know it's, I can't remember what the website is. I know, I should know this. I draw the effing YouTube shit in, whatever they tell you, you can't use something. So I don't even know the rules. Yeah, I know. I mean, it's nothing to stop me from singing it, but I mean. Thank you. Yeah, I love you. Yeah, that's right. After I have a tequila shot and you have a beer, one of these episodes, I may actually sing it. Don't put it past me.
01:46
I think I have a really good voice, especially when you put a microphone on me and, you know, bigger headphones. I just go to town. Amazing. I figured you wouldn't. I love, this conversation is super important to me because we did a live about it and it definitely touched the heart of a lot of our community because they're like, oh gosh, that's me. But I feel in the world that we live in, we are very protein centric.
02:15
Right? All of media and it's important. You wanna eat protein, right? But I think that in our pursuit to protein ourselves, we tend to forget that there are other very important nutrients and parts of our diet that can easily, easily, I mean, I'm in the, I love to use myself in this example the other day because I'm in the business, you know what I mean? And I still committed, you know,
02:45
I don't want to say a fail, but I just, I didn't even see it. It was like walking around with spinach in my teeth all day and being like, no one told me that I like, and I was like, what was I doing? But I totally lost track of what I was eating and I was super excited at the end of the day. I was like all happy and I got all the protein, but I like didn't get any of the other things. And then I rained on your parade and you were like, help me through, let me talk you through what I ate.
03:13
So for context, and this is what you did, and you took me through your breakfast lunch-ish, because it wasn't a lot of food there. And then by the time, I don't know, I don't know that dinner had actually featured at the time that we'd spoken, but at the end of it, I was like, Jess, it's just got like almost no food. Do you remember what you actually ate that day? Yeah, I was thinking about it.
03:40
I woke up, so I think I started on a good track because I like to have coffee. I put a little bit of A2, half and half in that. And then I do...
03:52
I do, what is it? What's the thing? The spoonfuls, I put, you know, two to four tablespoons of collagen peptides, which is, you know, somewhere between nine and 18 grams of protein. It depends on how much I feel like putting in my coffee that morning. So I did that. I had a smoothie. I think my smoothie was like almond milk and fruit and some protein powder. And maybe I put a scoop of Greek yogurt. I don't remember.
04:21
but I do know that it was a smoothie. And then, did I have that smoothie? Yes, I did. Maybe I didn't actually have that smoothie, but I know for a fact, I had a Fair Life, a chocolate Fair Life, which is beautifully advertised on the front of the package as 30 grams of protein, so you're filling like a million bucks, 150 calories. And then you and I, when we were together in Southern California, introduced me to this thing called the David's Protein Bar, which I had not had before I ate it.
04:51
which miraculously has another 28 grams of protein. So I had that and then I think I had maybe a little salad. I think I went and had some salad and protein after we talked. Yes, and prior to that. You need to go sit down actually and eat a meal uninterrupted calmly of food, not just bars and fair life. But I think that's pretty much what I had that day. I agree. And I think if...
05:20
Also, and actually this really does go speak to how terrible our memory is at what we ate because the other couple of things that you mentioned was a matcha tea that you had with your latte. Oh my God, I love you, Mickey. Oh my God, so can we just, let's go, let me start from the beginning here one more time. I didn't have a smoothie, okay? That's what I normally have every other day. I had a Fair Life, I had a David's Bar.
05:47
And then you're absolutely right. I met a friend and I kind of knew I was at a deficit at this point of just whatever I was eating, but I got a matcha green tea latte, folks. It was freaking delicious, so I will say. And now Pete's Coffee here, I don't know if you have this in New Zealand, is now adding, they'll add protein to your matcha drink. You're right. And then I saw you for our meeting, our...
06:16
podcast meeting and you're like, well, shit. And I told you about what I had. You're absolutely right. I love you. So glad you wrote notes. That's what I had that day. Just again, one more time, a fair life, a David's bar, a matcha with added protein. And then I did go into the sunset in the evening, I think. And I had, you know, a salad and chicken. And you also had like a bit of a banana with some peanut butter pre-workout. Yes. And you know what?
06:43
I didn't write notes. I'm really glad that you're in my fucking life because I am normally absolutely like that in the memory department. I want to tell you a funny story, but I won't do it right this second, but like, thank God. Oh my God, this day really was, maybe I just put it in my like distant memory, even though it was like three fucking days ago, but yeah, holy crap. Thank you. And this is my job, right? How ridiculous that I remember what you ate so I could report, but pardon me, wanted to remember it so we could talk about it on our podcast because Jess, you just-
07:11
It wasn't like you committed a cardinal sin or you didn't fail, but you fell into one of two traps, which I see all of the time when it comes to this hyper focus on protein. We want you to focus on protein. I love a hyper focus on protein because many people don't, despite the fact that it is in our little sphere of influence. Actually 99.9% of people do not think about these things. Anyway. So you did what you-
07:40
you fell into one of the two. So the one that I see quite a bit of the time, which isn't you, is that people think I need to focus on protein, and then they layer on protein to their already calorie replete diet, and they wonder why they gain weight. And they're like, it's the protein making me gain weight. And I'm like, no, it's the other foods which haven't, which.
08:05
something that they're doing means that they're not actually replacing some of these foods with protein, they're just layering it on. So I see that a bit. Now, you, on the other hand, fall into the other category of only really focusing on protein to the detriment of all of your other nutrients. And that's also quite common as well, particularly, I think, in this health-focused space. And
08:33
for people who are on the go all of the time, because you Jess, more than anyone I know, appear to get up in the morning, clients work out, children, household clients, clients work out, friends of service to everyone else, and you only really think about yourself at the end of the day, maybe with dinner and protein, sorry, salad and protein at dinner.
08:59
Yeah. And also from an energy perspective, because what actually sort of sparked the conversation, you were just like, I feel a bit flat. And I'm like, I think you've under eaten quite a bit when you don't have those calories, regardless of the fact that protein does balance blood sugar. And you know, it's so good for that and cognitive energy, it needs to be in a couched and in a calorie appropriate diet. And I think that's just where you fell down a little bit.
09:30
I so did. Thank God I have you to pick me up. And you know what? I'm telling you, I'm so blessed. And I wouldn't. You just nailed it. It's hard to render me speechless, but I'm a bit speechless right in this moment, because you're totally right. That's the thing. I think I said this in the live, I felt really seen and I feel really seen again, because I'm like, it's amazing what you can't see in yourself. You know? Yeah. It's really interesting to me. But also, just so people know, I didn't.
09:58
It wasn't an intentional, let's get Jess, let's analyze Jess's diet to the nth degree and pick it apart. Because I think you actually opened up the conversation by saying you felt a bit flat. And then we were just chatting about it and then it came out. So I was actually offering solicited advice and not, I wasn't just like, you know, giving my opinion without your...
10:25
without your blessing. So that was just so people know I wasn't just being a little bit opinionated. But this is true. And when you enter into the Jewish over caffeinated bestie that I have, that now you have in your life, you now just enter into sometimes getting unsolicited and solicited advice. I mean, kind of both ways. There is like, I'm really appreciative and here for it. And I
10:49
say that I think one of the reasons that our podcast is so unbelievably valuable to everybody is that I'm willing to be a very open, active participant. Study me, study you. It's just real life, isn't it? It's just real fucking life. I mean, you're literally going about your business and you just can't see all of the angles. And I think it's so great to have people around you that are just, I don't know, kind of looking behind you.
11:19
Sometimes you cross the street, you look left and you look right, but you don't see the car coming. So, I think it was like really, really valuable. And another thing, this is what I do remember, because I forgot the matcha tea and the whole deal. What I do remember you saying, and I want everybody to hear this really clearly, is that we can talk about macros and micros because yours truly did not. I don't always, didn't actually understand those. And for a lot of...
11:46
of my life, I'm like, oh, please don't even talk to me about macros and micros. That just sounds confusing and I don't want to. But the point being is that like they balance each other, right? Like you, you, you, you, protein is important, but if you aren't eating the right vitamins and minerals, and that's what's also found in like a more diverse diet. So although Fair Life and bars and Machinawa protein, it's nice that they have this, but you can't get away from making sure that you're having the right amount of food. And one thing that
12:15
you don't get with on the go eating, which is a big part of my life running a business and all of the ventures that I'm a part of and two very busy active children and a family is I do tend to be and that's a lot of our population, right? We're on the go. I see it in my clients and friends. They're carrying their fair life in their right hand and they're carrying their bar in the other and they're grabbing their coffee and thinking, okay, well, at least get the protein in a coffee because I haven't been able to.
12:42
up until this point really eaten much or had much. And bravo, right? Amazing. Yeah. Here is what something else to think about that I hadn't is that when you don't sit down even for five or six or seven or eight or 10 minutes, your body is like in a state of stress. Lots of things elicit stress in the body, but not properly kind of eating and finishing a meal kind of in a
13:12
quiet space and actually chewing and you know, like, totally. All of that, all of that really affects your cortisol levels which can disrupt your digestion, which can make you feel bloated or flat energetically. And quite frankly, friends, you may think that you're doing yourself a service, I do, because we live in, you know, this fizzy culture and we're supposed to just be flying everywhere and we're just, we put these levels of importance on things.
13:42
really, it's really critical to do that. And that's what kind of like stopped me in my track. So in the past few days, I've at least spent like time at the table eating, not for an half an hour, an hour, but for five or six or seven minutes, more than I was doing before. Totally. And you know what, it's the, it's, I mean, that's, of course, the other important thing is how your nervous system responds. And as you mentioned, it totally impacts digestion.
14:10
And also will impact your appetite later in the day when you are relaxed and despite under eating earlier, you can still overeat more so once your nervous system finally sort of calms down. So, so if you finding those five, six or seven minutes and you're chewing properly or you are engaged in that behavior, then at least your brain gets a little bit of a message going, I'm relaxing.
14:38
I'm nourishing myself, then I'm moving on to this next thing. Like it does actually get that opportunity, whereas if you are rushing around all the time, just doesn't, and it's really common, super common. Yeah, it was just eye-opening. So I think, again, feel free to utilize these.
14:58
snacks and things, like they're not wrong, you know, to put in your diet. And please definitely try the matcha latte with the protein. I highly recommend it. That piece that was really good. Um, but just, you know, in your quest to like get your protein and just also make sure that you're like being mindful about how much time you're actually like stopping and eating and chewing. And for the love of God, you guys, I know you're all sitting at your desk on your 27 conference calls and you have no time to barely take a bathroom break, but just try.
15:28
Yeah. You know, if it means calendaring the stuff in, you do it with your workouts, but you know, at least hear what Mickey and I are saying, because your body, your nervous system will be so much more receptive to performing for you. Yeah, that's 100% right. And again, the things that we're trying to recreate, this is all about creating better systems for all of you,
15:57
create these systems, they're just incremental, you know, they're just little bits at a time. So that's why when I say, I joke I use five to seven minutes, because I know that we don't sometimes have more than that, but better than the 30 seconds I'm downing in the car and I'm frenetically doing 10 things, I'm not even paying attention to anything. So thank you for that. I'm gonna try it out and see if I feel a little less flat. Nobody wants a flat Jess.
16:23
No, not at all. And then the whole digestion piece is just a whole other piece of it, right? So if anyone struggles with digestion, then this is like a really great tool is just actually assess your environment and how you feel, breathe properly right through your diaphragm so you're calming yourself down. And then ginger tea, raw apple cider vinegar, like these are two things which can help.
16:50
Do I have to quickly drink the raw, just out of curiosity for the raw apple cider? I tend to put that into a dressing. Like I put that with a little maple syrup and a little bit of olive oil and I mix up and put it over my salad. Are you saying I have to take just the apple cider vinegar like a shot? People say it would be good to do- It's okay, I'm here for it. But is that what you're recommending? About 20 minutes before a meal.
17:13
take the shot of apple cider vinegar? Yeah, yeah. How much am I supposed to take? Like a tequila shot glass? Like a shot, like a 20 mls, which is probably about a tequila shot. It depends if you have one or two. I can't wait till we do tequila shots and then we sing. Oh, that is not happening. I'm not doing a tequila shot. I can't wait. Sorry, Jess. I'll do tequila shot and sing. Yes. But in the meantime, I'll take a shot similar to what you do with the tequila shot and have that before 20 minutes or so before a meal.
17:41
Now, one more question about the apple cider. Is that once a day mix? It would be with a meal that, yeah, like when you're sitting down for a meal, that's when I would do it. And then you wanna rinse your mouth out so you don't have the acidity of the vinegar on your teeth as well. What if I can't wait 20 minutes, I have to take it, go rinse out my mouth and then eat. Is that okay? Yeah, that's fine. That's totally fine. Yeah. And I probably won't be able to do that more than once a day realistically. Which is still.
18:10
better than not doing it at all. Okay, great. Amazing. Apple cider vinegar, you heard it here. And then maybe just for you, some ginger tea in the afternoon. I love this. Ginger tea, apple cider vinegar. I'm gonna report back. Amazing. Thank you. But I do appreciate you so much. No, you're so welcome. Pick me back up. We fall and we have the people in our life pick us back up. So I love it. Well, I hope that you are feeling better because you are getting in more, but this is just,
18:40
you know, this is just a continual like conversation as we just figure out what works best, right? Yes, and we'll have so many conversations about this because I also know all of you guys that you make these food choices based on many years of disordered thinking around food. So we'll return back to that at some point too, but there's lots to unpack when it comes to food. But it's a really good start.
19:07
So I'm glad we revisited this. I hope that you have a, I know you have like a whole day ahead of you and I'm gonna head into my dinner. Amazing, what's for dinner, Jess? Great question. I'm having apple cider vinegar shot. Yeah. For sure. That was already in the plan. And I'm gonna have like chicken meatballs. Oh, lovely. And I think tonight I'm gonna do it over a little like pasta or rice.
19:33
Nice. And I like to kind of just put it all on top of my salad. So I kind of warm up the chicken meatball with a little bit of rice and then I dump it in. I eat, I often call this like, you know, a, I call it like a, you know, garbage disposal in the sense that it's like everything kind of goes in the bowl and then I just mix it all up together. Yeah, amazing. That sounds lovely. I make sure my bowl is pretty because the contents inside of it sometimes looks a little pretty bowl, crazy inside.
20:01
I love it. That sounds lovely. Well, enjoy it. Thank you, my dear. All right. See you Jess. Talk to you soon. Bye.
